Windy This Wednesday, May 22, the third heatwave in Mexico continues, caused by a high-pressure circulation, so temperatures of up to 45 degrees -and more- are expected in 27 states; likewise, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) indicated in its first report of the day that rains of various intensities accompanied by strong gusts of wind, electrical discharges, and possible hail fall are expected.

The SMN said that temperatures above 45 degrees are expected in Sinaloa, San Luis Potosí, Nuevo León, Guerrero, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, and Yucatán; from 40 to 45 degrees in Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro (north), Hidalgo (north), Puebla (north and southwest), Morelos, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Quintana Roo; from 35 to 40 degrees in Baja California, Baja California Sur, and State of Mexico (southwest); and from 30 to 35 degrees in Tlaxcala and Mexico City.

Similarly, the agency of the National Water Commission (Conagua) warned that there will be strong rains in Coahuila, Nuevo León, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Mexico City, and Chiapas, which will be accompanied by gusts of wind, electrical discharges, and possible hail fall, in addition to possibly causing reduced visibility, landslides, waterlogging, floods, and an increase in the levels of rivers and streams; showers and isolated rains are also expected in Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Morelos, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Durango, Guanajuato, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.

Winds with gusts of 50 to 70 km/h and possible dust storms are also expected in Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosí; southern component winds with gusts of 50 to 70 km/h and possible formation of whirlwinds or tornadoes in Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas, and with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h in Veracruz; finally, there is a forecast of gusts of 40 to 60 km/h in Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, with possible dust storms in Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Aguascalientes, Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Puebla, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Mexico City, Guerrero, and Oaxaca.

In the case of the Valley of Mexico, the Conagua agency indicated that it is expected clear sky, haze, and a temperate environment, and in the afternoon a warm to hot environment, partly cloudy to cloudy sky with the possibility of rains with electrical discharges and hail. In the State of Mexico, the minimum temperatures will be from 11 to 13 degrees and the maximum from 29 to 32 degrees, while in Mexico City, the minimum temperatures will be from 18 to 20 degrees and the maximum between 32 and 34 degrees.

Due to this forecast, the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection of Mexico City activated an orange alert for temperatures of 31 to 33 degrees in Azcapotzalco, Álvaro Obregón, Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, Miguel Hidalgo, Tláhuac, Venustiano Carranza, and Xochimilco; and a yellow alert for temperatures of 28 to 30 degrees in Cuajimalpa, Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, and Tlalpan. Therefore, the agency recommended:

  • Not to expose oneself to the sun for prolonged periods and not to perform intense activities under the rays, especially between 11:00 and 16:00 hours.
  • To stay in the shade or in cool places, and not to stay for a long time inside a vehicle with closed windows.
  • To use sunscreen (minimum SPF 15).
  • To wear light colors, sunglasses, a hat, and/or cap.
  • To drink plenty of fluids.
  • To wash and disinfect fruits and vegetables, as well as to wash hands before preparing and consuming food, and after going to the bathroom.
  • To avoid eating in public places, as the heat quickly decomposes food.
  • To pay attention to the health of people, especially vulnerable groups such as babies, girls, boys, the elderly, and the sick; in case of heatstroke or sunstroke, it is necessary to go to the doctor.
