MEXICO CITY — Local authorities have issued a Yellow Alert for 11 of Mexico City’s 16 boroughs (alcaldías) following a forecast of heavy rains and potential hailstorms. The Secretariat of Integrated Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) urged residents to take precautions as a warm afternoon gives way to severe evening storms.
According to meteorologists, the affected areas are expected to experience heavy rainfall measuring between 15 and 29 millimeters. The alert, which warns of strong winds and localized hail, went into effect during the afternoon and is expected to last until midnight. The 11 boroughs under watch include Álvaro Obregón, Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Cuajimalpa, Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo A. Madero, La Magdalena Contreras, Miguel Hidalgo, Milpa Alta, Tlalpan, and Xochimilco.
Civil Protection officials warned that the intense downpours could trigger flash floods, severe traffic disruptions, and falling debris across the capital. To mitigate risks, the SGIRPC released a set of safety recommendations for the public. Residents are advised to carry umbrellas or raincoats, clear trash from street drains to prevent blockages, and avoid pouring grease or oil down home sinks.
For those commuting, authorities emphasized the danger of navigating flooded streets. Drivers are urged to proceed with extreme caution, as currents may carry uprooted tree branches or loose objects. Pedestrians and motorists alike are instructed to stay away from old walls, trees, power lines, and large billboards that appear vulnerable to collapsing under high winds.
As the rainy season intensifies across the Valley of Mexico, city officials continue to monitor weather patterns closely, reminding citizens to stay updated through official channels and report emergencies immediately to 911 or local civil protection hotlines.
