SALTILLO, COAHUILA — The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) achieved a sweeping victory in Coahuila’s local elections, winning all 16 directly elected legislative districts and securing an absolute majority in the state Congress.

According to the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP), with nearly 82% of the ballots counted, the PRI-led coalition captured 55.22% of the total vote. This performance placed them far ahead of the runner-up Morena-PT coalition, which garnered 25.96%. In several key districts, including Acuña and Ramos Arizpe, the PRI outperformed Morena by more than 30 percentage points.

The biggest surprise of the night came from the newly formed state party, Nuevas Ideas. Participating in its first local election, the party secured 5.8% of the vote, outpacing traditional political forces like the Green Party (PVEM).

Conversely, the National Action Party (PAN) suffered a historic defeat. Contending independently after breaking its previous alliance with the PRI, the PAN failed to reach the 3% threshold required to qualify for proportional representation seats, completely shutting them out of the upcoming legislature.

The election, which saw approximately 50% voter turnout across the state’s 2.5 million registered voters, was the only local legislative race held in Mexico this year. Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas reported that the voting process remained generally peaceful, supported by a security deployment of nearly 10,000 federal, state, and municipal elements.

Following the closure of the polls, the national leadership of Morena criticized the process, calling it a “state election” and alleging widespread vote-buying by the PRI using digital QR codes. In response, PRI National President Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas rejected the accusations, stating that the decisive results reflected the public’s satisfaction with Coahuila’s current stability, security, and economic growth.
