MONTERREY, Mexico — Thousands of riders flooded the streets of Monterrey for the “Mega Cabalgata Norteña,” a massive equestrian parade organized to showcase northern Mexican traditions and kick off local festivities ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The event drew an estimated 2,000 participants and 1,500 horses. Led by Nuevo León Governor Samuel García, alongside Guadalupe Mayor Héctor García and State Cabinet Coordinator Javier Navarro, the procession aimed to project the region’s unique cultural identity to incoming international tourists before tournament matches begin on June 11.
The ride began at 10:00 AM from the parking facilities of the iconic Parque Fundidora. The column of horses and riders smoothly transitioned onto Constitución Avenue, instantly drawing the attention of local families who gathered at landmarks like the Puente Verde to cheer on the procession. From there, the massive contingent advanced toward the Macroplaza and passed the State Government Palace before looping back along Washington and Tapia streets to return to the park.
To manage the heavy traffic and minimize disruptions in downtown Monterrey, municipal authorities implemented an extensive security and transit operation. Measures included the temporary suspension of the city’s regular Sunday sports route and the setup of a counterflow lane on Morones Prieto Avenue. The streets were successfully cleared and reopened to regular traffic by early afternoon.
The celebration concluded back at Parque Fundidora with a vibrant festival featuring regional cuisine and live norteño music from local artists, including Salomón Robles and Banda Treviñosa. State officials called the historic event a complete success, emphasizing that it set the perfect welcoming tone for the global soccer tournament while keeping Nuevo León’s rich heritage at the center of the world stage.
