MÉRIDA, YUCATAN, Mexico — According to Sol Yucatan, former Mérida Mayor Renán Barrera Concha is facing intense scrutiny following allegations that he invested over 250 million pesos ($14.5 million USD) into six bars and restaurants located both in Yucatán and abroad.

According to local investigative reports, Barrera Concha recently opened a Mexican bar and restaurant named “Cantina León” in the upscale area of Coral Gables, Florida, just minutes from Miami. The establishment is reportedly operated by “The Rabbit Group,” with Barrera Concha’s brother, Jorge Barrera Concha, and chef Gerardo B. De Negri listed as business partners.

The revelation has intensified growing questions regarding the origin of the former mayor’s wealth. Beyond the commercial investments, questions have been raised regarding an apartment in Miami and a portfolio of 21 properties registered under his name across the Yucatecan municipalities of Mérida, Conkal, and Acanceh—an estate valued at over 200 million pesos. Critics point out that this accumulated wealth vastly exceeds the total salary Barrera Concha earned during his nine years in public office.

The citizen watchdog organization ¡Ya Basta! has escalated the matter by filing a formal complaint against the former official with the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.

The group alleges that Barrera Concha’s administration caused systemic public asset damage totaling at least 1 billion pesos, a figure that includes long-standing, unresolved litigation over municipal street lighting contracts. While legal proceedings continue, public pressure mounts for a transparent audit into the former mayor’s international financial network.
