Automobile drivers and frequent commuters traveling along the Mérida-Valladolid highway in Yucatán have raised strong complaints regarding the security checkpoints (puntos de revisión) operated by the State Secretariat of Security Pública (SSP). The focal points of friction center around checkpoints established near the intersections leading to Ebtún and Yalcobá.
According to public grievances voiced by local motorists, the primary concerns involve prolonged delays and perceived intimidation during routine inspections:
Lengthy Inspections: Drivers report that despite having their vehicle documentation and paperwork entirely in order, police procedures sometimes require motorists to step out of their cars for inspections lasting between 20 and 40 minutes, causing significant travel delays.
Complaints of Intimidation: Affected individuals have criticized the demeanor of certain officers, claiming the tone and approach during checkpoints feel aggressive or discourteous.
