Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum unleashed a historic clash with teachers by crushing their right to free expression with the police, igniting a nationwide protest.
The order to use force today against the teachers of Section 22 in Oaxaca demonstrates the most intolerant face of the current government, something never before seen against teachers.
The CNTE (National Coordinator of Education Workers) activated a national resistance plan, uniting its sections in Zacatecas, Guerrero, Michoacán, and the rest of the country to stage a massive sit-in and a large-scale march this June 1st.
The now unified teachers warn that consolation prizes are over: the objective is now singular, urgent, and non-negotiable; they are demanding the complete repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law, a campaign promise of the president to guarantee a dignified retirement, discarding any other proposals that are merely for show.
The teachers made it clear that they will not be swayed by promises of pensions from social programs that only seek to keep them chained to the acronym of a political party.
To make matters worse, the president has already publicly announced that she will not stand before the masses, demonstrating her fear of public scrutiny and direct demands from the people.
But the teachers’ movement will use the spotlight of the upcoming World Cup to expose this repression to the eyes of the entire world.
Will the president continue to hide behind the security forces for fear of the people, or will she have the courage to fulfill what she promised them during her campaign?
