In León, Guanajuato, the IMSS Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad (UMAE) T1 faced a critical situation on April 10, 2025, when 14 scheduled surgeries were suspended due to a lack of medical supplies and medicines. Patients, who had undergone preoperative preparations and were ready for their procedures, were informed of the cancellations early in the morning. The surgeries included complex interventions such as neurocranial repairs, glaucoma treatments, and orthopedic procedures.

The shortage affected 11 operating rooms, leaving them unused and disrupting the hospital’s ability to provide essential care. Among the canceled surgeries were a cranial reconstruction, a total knee replacement, and a melanoma resection. Patients were left in recovery areas, awaiting rescheduling, while hospital staff struggled to address the supply chain issues.

This incident highlights broader challenges within Mexico’s healthcare system, particularly in public institutions like IMSS. The lack of critical resources has sparked concerns about the management and distribution of medical supplies. Local authorities and healthcare professionals have called for immediate action to prevent further disruptions and ensure patient safety.

The situation has drawn attention to the need for systemic reforms to improve resource allocation and operational efficiency in public hospitals. It underscores the importance of addressing supply chain vulnerabilities to maintain the quality of healthcare services in Mexico.
