According to journalist and communicator José Luis Preciado, in Merida, Yucatan, the iconic Paseo de Montejo is dying… and everyone is ignoring it.

What’s happening on Paseo de Montejo is already noticeable: closed storefronts, “for rent” signs that no one takes, and properties falling apart into disrepair.

It’s not just the issue of parking space or the controversial bike path.

The real problem is deeper: increasingly high rents, landlords who prefer to leave properties vacant rather than lower prices, and urban planning that isn’t working for businesses.

This isn’t a new story. Something very similar happened on Cancun’s Avenida Yaxchilán years ago… and it ended up as a neglected and forgotten area.

This isn’t progress. It’s a warning.

If things aren’t corrected now, Paseo de Montejo won’t just change… it will die.
