BOGOTÁ, Colombia — Members of “Leyendas Obeliz,” a children’s youth soccer team from Tijuana, Mexico, are appealing to state and federal authorities for assistance returning home after becoming stranded in Colombia following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on Monday.
The team had traveled to Armenia, Colombia, to participate in an international tournament when the major quake struck, leaving them stranded amid logistical chaos and flight cancellations. Through emotional video messages shared on social media, coaches and young players described the terrifying experience and requested official intervention to secure their safe passage back to Baja California.
“We came to Colombia for an international tournament. We want to request support so we can get home to Tijuana and be with our families,” said team member “Chucky” in one of the videos.
Following public appeals, state officials—including Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar—established contact with the delegation. The team is currently traveling by land from Armenia to the capital city of Bogotá to secure return flights.
The powerful earthquake has caused widespread disruption across the South American nation, leaving at least 169 people dead and more than 600 injured, according to preliminary figures released by local authorities.
