SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, SLP — In a bid to boost regional connectivity and meet the growing demand for beach destinations, the Ministry of Tourism for San Luis Potosí has announced ongoing negotiations to secure direct flights to Mazatlán and Puerto Escondido.
Yolanda Cepeda Echavarría, the head of the state’s Ministry of Tourism, revealed that the administration is actively working with Mexican ultra-low-cost airline Volaris to establish these new routes. The initiative comes on the heels of a successful partnership in June, which saw the introduction of four new domestic routes and one international destination from the San Luis Potosí International Airport.
According to Cepeda Echavarría, the expansion responds directly to requests from local travel agencies, tour operators, and business leaders. While the airport currently offers direct flights to popular coastal hubs like Puerto Vallarta and Cancún, sector representatives have strongly advocated for more options. The inclusion of Mazatlán and Puerto Escondido aims to capture a broader segment of leisure travelers and strengthen the state’s commercial competitiveness.
The negotiations are receiving cross-governmental support, with the Ministry of Economic Development and local business organizations collaborating to ensure the financial viability of the routes.
To guarantee the permanence of these new options, the Tourism Minister urged residents to actively use and promote the airport’s existing routes, including its direct international flight to Chicago. Furthermore, she advised travelers to book through certified professionals and registered travel agencies to ensure safe and secure transactions.
If finalized, these new flights are expected to significantly diversify the travel market for residents of San Luis Potosí while bringing a fresh influx of tourism and economic growth to the state.
