XILITLA, San Luis Potosi — After more than a decade in limbo, a major infrastructure breakthrough is coming to the Huasteca Potosina region. San Luis Potosí Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona has officially confirmed that construction will begin on a brand-new central bus terminal in the municipality of Xilitla.
The announcement, made ahead of the governor’s upcoming working tour of the region, addresses a critical infrastructure gap that has hindered local mobility for years. Currently, Xilitla lacks a centralized terminal, forcing long-distance and regional commercial buses to load and unload passengers directly on public streets. Local authorities have long cited this makeshift setup as a major source of traffic congestion and operational headaches within the historic town.
Establishing a proper bus station has been on the municipal agenda since at least the 2015–2018 Municipal Development Plan, but the project previously stalled at the planning and negotiation stages. By concentrating all regional transit services into a single, dedicated facility, the new terminal aims to streamline public transportation and significantly improve traffic flow.
Beyond improving daily commutes for residents, the terminal is expected to provide a substantial boost to the local economy. As one of San Luis Potosí’s most iconic Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns), Xilitla draws thousands of domestic and international tourists annually, famously known for attractions like the surrealist Edward James Sculpture Garden.
While the state government has not yet disclosed the total financial investment or the estimated completion timeline, the kickoff of the terminal highlights a broader developmental push for the area. During his regional visit, Governor Gallardo is also slated to inaugurate several key roadways, launch a major municipal drinking water system, and break ground on a new animal shelter.
