Claudia Sheinbaum has been harshly criticized by millions of Mexicans on social media for saying she didn’t attend the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony at the Mexico City Stadium (formerly known as Azteca Stadium), claiming to be an austere president who doesn’t condone ostentatious events because she is close to the humble people of our country.
However, as on many other occasions, her words don’t match her actions, as she hosted a lavish party at the luxurious Chapultepec Castle, attended by high-ranking FIFA executives, foreign government officials, and some Mexican public servants.
Sheinbaum Clarifies FIFA Event
During her morning press conference on June 18, 2026, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed several key national security, foreign relations, and domestic policy issues, clarifying her recent appearance at a FIFA event and firmly rejecting suggestions of U.S. military intervention.
Addressing social media buzz regarding a video of her with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Sheinbaum clarified that she did not stay for the gala dinner held at the historic Chapultepec Castle.
The President explained that she declined the dinner invitation but agreed to deliver a brief one-page welcome message before leaving.
She noted that FIFA rented the venue, paying over one million pesos (around $50,000 USD), with a formal financial report pending from the Ministry of Culture.
