Ferromex will be attentive to the measures determined by the authorities of the different levels of government.

Given the notable increase in migrants concentrated in various regions of the country and the severe risk that the use of freight trains for transportation represents to their integrity, Ferromex of Grupo México reported that it has temporarily detained 60 trains so far, equivalent to the capacity of 1,800 trucks, on routes to the north of the country, in the regions impacted by this social and humanitarian problem.

“In recent days, nearly half a dozen unfortunate cases of injuries or deaths have been recorded among groups of people who, individually or in families, including girls and boys, boarded freight trains on their route to the north, despite the serious danger that this implies,” the company said in a statement.

The accumulation of migrants in recent days, he added, has increased significantly.

“On the railway cars and in the railway operations yard in Torreón, Coahuila, for example, there are more than 1,500 people; in Irapuato, Guanajuato, more than 800; in San Francisco de los Romo, Aguascalientes, around a thousand; and on the route between Chihuahua and Ciudad Juárez, more than a thousand people occupy the cargo gondolas,” he explained.

Given this, Ferromex added that it will temporarily suspend its operations on the affected routes to protect the physical integrity of migrants and will be attentive to the measures determined by the authorities of the different levels of government.

“Likewise, the company has informed its clients about the temporary effects that the freight rail service will have on production chains, supply, and international trade,” he said.
