41 illegal migrants were detained when they were traveling in overcrowded conditions inside a truck in the Mexican municipality of Arriaga, in the southeastern state of Chiapas, the state prosecutor’s office reported on Thursday, April 21.
“The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) through the Istmo Costa District Attorney’s Office, rescued 41 migrants and arrested a male person as likely responsible for the crime Violation of the General Population Law, in the municipality of Arriaga, Chiapas”, reported the agency in a bulletin.
The events occurred at the checkpoint very close to the border between the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, when the foreigners were found during a review of the trailer box during an inspection by the specialized police.
Upon opening the truck, authorities found the 41 foreigners traveling in overcrowded conditions.
“César Iván ‘N’ and the insured vehicle were made available to the Attorney General’s Office, while the 41 rescued migrants were transferred to the National Migration Institute for the corresponding procedures,” the FGE reported in the text.
The region is experiencing a record flow to the United States, whose Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office detected more than 1.7 million undocumented immigrants on the border with Mexico in the fiscal year 2021, which ended on September 30.
Mexico deported more than 114,000 foreigners in 2021, according to data from the Migration Policy Unit of the country’s Ministry of the Interior.
In addition, the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (Comar) received a record 131,448 refugee applications in 2021. Of these petitioners, more than 51,000 are Haitians.
Mexico’s INM recently reported that between January 1 and April 13 of this year it intercepted 115,379 migrants, of which 15% were minors, mainly from Central American nations.
