The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in Mexico near Tapachula de Cordova y Ordoñez, Tapachula, Chiapas.

The earthquake hit around noon on Thursday, March 10th, 2022, at 1:34 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 35 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.


Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9 and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.9.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Badenia (pop. 320) located 68 km from the epicenter, Puerto Madero (pop. 9,600) 72 km away, Mazatlan (pop. 6,800) 78 km away, Brisas Barra de Suchiate (pop. 13,700) 87 km away, Vida Mejor I (pop. 6,500) 91 km away, Huehuetan (pop. 7,800) 95 km away, Tapachula de Cordova y Ordoñez (pop. 202,700) 98 km away, Ciudad Hidalgo (pop. 14,600) 98 km away, and Huixtla (pop. 32,000) 98 km away.
