The Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya (Center for Textiles of the Mayan World), located in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, has been honored with an international grant from the British Museum. The financial support will be directly channeled into modernizing and upgrading the institution’s photographic cataloging and digital archive systems.
Preserving Indigenous Textile Heritage
The museum houses an invaluable collection of traditional garments, backstrap-loom weaves, and ceremonial textiles created by indigenous communities across Chiapas and the broader Mayan region. This new funding will allow curators and conservationists to implement high-standard digital preservation protocols, ensuring that delicate historical pieces and contemporary indigenous artistry are properly documented, protected, and made accessible for academic research and global cultural exhibitions.
Cultural representatives highlighted that this international recognition not only validates the meticulous preservation work being done in Chiapas but also strengthens global awareness of the deep historical and artistic value embedded in Mayan textile traditions.
