The Atlantic hurricane season continues to be active and forecasters are currently monitoring two developing tropical storms.
Tropical Storm Peter is expected to pass north of the Lesser Antilles early this week and will track close enough to bring heavy rain and swells to the northern Leeward Islands on Monday and Tuesday.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center’s (NHC) update at 5:00 pm on Sunday, Peter is 560 km east of the northern Leeward Islands. Maximum sustained winds remain near 75 km/h with higher gusts and a turn to the northwest is expected to occur by Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Seventeen became Tropical Storm Rose on Sunday evening. Rose is the 17th named storm of this year’s Atlantic hurricane season.
According to the NHC, the disturbance is 595 km west-southwest of Cabo Verde Island and is moving north-northwest near 26 km/h. A motion toward the northwest is forecast to begin Sunday night and continue through Wednesday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 65 km/h with higher gusts and some strengthening is expected through Monday. By Tuesday, environmental conditions are expected to become less conducive for development, and the system will likely begin to slowly weaken.
