The city of Querétaro closed the first quarter (in the weeks from January 4 to March 28) with a hotel occupancy of 22.4%, an indicator that shows a moderate rise in this period, but which remains below the pre-pandemic benchmarks.

This percentage represents a slight recovery, of 1.6 percentage points, compared to the occupancy of 20.8% reported at the end of February, specifies the Statistical Information System of the Tourism Sector (Datatur).

However, it is still 26.4 percentage points down from a year ago, from the period of December 30, 2019, to May 22, 2020, when it was 48.8% occupancy.

It also means an improvement of only 0.1 percentage points as a function of the end of last year, when it ended the year with an occupancy of 22.3 percent.

Week by week, the hotel industry in the state capital shows progressive indicators. The first week of the year began with an occupancy of 15.8%, which for week two climbed to an accumulated 18.2%, week three accumulated 18.9% occupancy, in week four it was 19.3%, in week five it fell slightly to an accumulated 18.9%, week six again grew to 19.4% occupancy.

For week seven it reached 20% accumulated occupancy, from January 4 to February 21; in week eight it reached 20.8%, in week 9 to 21%, in week 10 it climbed to 21.7%, in week 11 to 22.1%, and in week 12 to 22.4% occupancy.

Prior to the Covid-19 contingency, Querétaro reported 571 lodging establishments. In total, there were at least 9,712 business units related to tourism services, according to the 2020 edition of the State Economic Yearbook, which reports information for 2019.

There were also 8,612 food and beverage service establishments, 285 travel agencies, 168 tourist guide establishments, 38 tourist transport companies, and 38 car rental companies.

Digital passports

To encourage tourist activity, the Querétaro delegation of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Canaco Servytur) in coordination with the technology company Xertify have issued 150 digital passports of vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, after having launched this initiative in March of the current year.

Through the passport, the information that proves the traveler’s vaccination is compiled, in order to be exposed in airports and tourist destinations, facilitating their stay in national and international destinations.

This initiative will be extended to other regions of the state, so it is expected to expand it to the entities of Guanajuato and Jalisco, in order to generate collaboration for the economic reactivation of tourism.

In this environment, Querétaro will remain in Scenario A for the next week, at least until June 6, determined the State’s Technical Health Committee. Hotels and motels are at 75% occupancy.
