The owners of the hotel & casino chain canceled the project due to the controversy that arose around the Estero de San José del Cabo.

San Jose del Cabo / Baja California Sur.- On April 26, 2018, Caesars Entertainment Corporation announced the construction of a Las Vegas-style Caesar Palace hotel in Los Cabos.

The work would be in charge of Grupo Questro, and it was planned to invest 250 million dollars for the construction of the resort, without casinos or gambling venues, on the Estero de San José del Cabo polygon.

Caesars Palace Los Cabos, would have 500 accommodation spaces between rooms and luxury suites. A convention center of 400 thousand square meters, area of entertainment, full-service spa, three restaurants serving haute cuisine, swimming pools, cabanas, fitness center, tennis courts, and access to two golf courses of the firm.

The beach land chosen for the construction of the hotel is located one kilometer away from the natural ecosystem of Los Cabos.

In that same month, the corporate Caesars Entertainment obtained the construction license from the Los Cabos Municipal Government to start the project.

Despite the fact that the representatives of the global company said that the permit for the construction of the hotel had the authorizations of the localstate and federal government in environmental matters, groups in defense of the environment of Baja California Sur opposed the work.

The reason? That the Estero de San José area would be harmed by construction work, damaging vital mangrove areas and irreversibly affecting the flora and fauna that inhabit this space, destroying the Estero Cabeño forever.

El Estero is registered as a RAMSAR site. An international category of protection for wetlands unique and necessary for wildlife. Especially as a migration passage for coastal birds.

Despite the disagreements, work began on the site. The Caesars Palace hotel had begun to emerge from its foundations in San Jose.

In Los Cabos and La Pazmarchesdemonstrations and public complaints were published on social networks to prevent the construction of the hotel.

They demanded that federal authorities intervene to begin a thorough investigation, in order to stop the possible ecocide that was taking place in the Estero Joséfino.

Countering the offensive, Grupo Questro executives argued time and again that the Caesars Palace project would not directly or indirectly affect the San José del Cabo estuary.

The work was being built “at a great distance from the natural polygon – according to Grupo Questro – in no way would the protected natural area be put at risk .

They were months of confrontations and bids, questioning the legality of the permits for the construction of the resort and the negative effects that the disappearance of the ecological zone would cause due to the construction of a 5-star hotel .

The media scandal detonated, and the echo caused echoed until it reached the ears of the owners of the brand and owners of the chain of hotels and casinos Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

In a blunt way, they decided to cancel the project, ensuring that for them the prestige is more important than the growth of the empire of resorts distributed in various tourist regions of Mexico and in other countries of the world.

With orders from above, the construction work stopped in San José del Cabo.

The work was finally suspended, three years after the directors of Caesars Corporation announced with great fanfare the opening of the first Caesars Palace hotel in Baja California Sur.

Puerto Los Cabos would be the main market for the introduction to the expansion of the Caesars brand in North America .

With the cancellation of the construction of the hotel, an investment of 250 million dollars was lost and the creation of more than 1,700 sources of employment in the destination of Los Cabos.
