Covid-19 cases and deaths increase in tourist states in Mexico

The director of PAHO, Carissa Etienne, indicated that the cause of the increase in coronavirus infections was due to the end of the year holidays.

In Mexican states that attracted tourists during the end of the year, holidays have registered an increase in cases and deaths from Covid-19, the Pan American Health Organization warned this Wednesday.

PAHO Director Carissa Etienne specifically pointed to the states of Baja California Sur, Guerrero, Nayarit, and Quintana Roo.

While infections with the virus that causes Covid-19 are finally declining in the United States and Canada after weeks of sustained increase.

In South America, Colombia reported the highest incidence of cases, followed by Brazil, where the city of Manaus continues to see exponential increases in both cases and deaths, Carissa Etienne said.

Three new variants have been detected in 20 countries of the American continent, although their frequency remains limited, Etienne said in a briefing.
