Inhabitants of Campeche said they were not against the mega work, but they seek to defend their heritage, as some have property titles from the late 1800s.

Last Saturday, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, supervised the work of the Mayan Train, from Calkiní, Campeche, where residents of the surrounding neighborhoods intercepted the vehicle in which it was traveling.

The residents of the neighborhoods of Camino Real, La Ermita, and Santa Lucía gave the president a letter asking him to change the route of a section of the train so that their houses are not demolished.

The members of the Tres Barrios collective said that they are not against the train, but they seek to defend their heritage since they have lived there for generations. Some even have property titles from the late 1800s.

“We wrote to you with great fear of being evicted by the Mayan Train Project. We want to be very clear with you, as a group we are not against your project because we know that it will help boost the economy by generating jobs in our state of Campeche. (…) We all agree to defend our heritage and neighborhoods that we have inhabited for so many generations ”, says the letter consulted by online magazine Animal Político.

The section that will pass through the area where the residents live is section 2, which has already been given by the consortium made up of Operadora CICSA S.A. de C.V. of Grupo Carso, of Carlos Slim, in an association agreement with FCC Construcción S.A.

And it is already stipulated that in 20 meters on one side and 20 meters on the other of the rail track there can be no houses or anything, since the speed that the train will reach will be more than 100 kilometers per hour, so if the project is done here, the families would have to leave.

The inhabitants of the Tres Barrios have also obtained the support of organizations such as UN-Habitat, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC), and the United Nations Organization for the Education, Science, and Culture (Unesco).

“FONATUR and UN-Habitat officials informed that with the new train they are going to evict people and this is not up for discussion. “They have not wanted to tell us why they cannot modify the train route, they only tell us that they are going to take us to other lands and that they will give us a house, but we already have houses. The areas that they propose to us are not safe or habitable ”, warned the inhabitants, highlighting that moving means losing proximity to the sea – on which they depend – and abandoning their neighborhood bond and identity.
