The government of Campeche has officially announced that it will fully absorb the cost of passenger transfers within the “Ko’ox” public transportation system. The measure guarantees that local commuters can change buses without incurring any additional charges during a 90-minute window, capping total travel expenses at a maximum fare of 12 pesos per trip.
According to the State Regulatory Agency for Transportation (Artec), the state administration will directly cover the six-peso fee previously charged for transfers. Officials emphasize that this permanent subsidy aims to ease the economic burden on daily commuters, students, and workers who rely on the integrated mobility network. While the decision has been praised for reducing overall transit costs, it has also sparked local debate, with opposition figures arguing that passengers primarily desire the restoration of direct routes rather than subsidized transfers. State authorities maintain that the transfer-based design remains necessary due to the current fleet size and logistical layout aimed at reducing downtown congestion.
