Travel survey finds Mexico, Caribbean faring better than most
Flight bookings for fourth-quarter travel are down 83% globally, but bookings to Mexico and the Caribbean look “significantly less bad” than the rest of the world, the research firm ForwardKeys said Thursday.

And in two Mexican destinations, bookings are back at or exceeding 2019 levels.
During the first four weeks of September, flight bookings to San Jose del Cabo were up 26% over last year, and Cancun was back to the same level as 2019, ForwardKeys said.

As of Sept. 19, bookings from all international markets to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Aruba were behind by 52%, 59%, 56%, 47% and 50%, respectively, the firm said, compared with the 83% global average.
“What sets Mexico apart, and some Caribbean islands too, is that they have stayed open to visitors during the pandemic, or they have reopened sooner, and, as a result, they have gained market share,” said Olivier Ponti, vice president of insights for ForwardKeys.
