INEGI Report: Food and Mobility Dominate Household Spending in Puebla

- October 7, 2026

In the state of Puebla, Mexico, the most fundamental necessities—food and mobility—are consuming the lion’s share of household budgets, according to recent data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

Data from the National Expenditure Survey (ENG) reveals that families in Puebla spend an average of 22,490 pesos per month. Significantly, this figure falls below the national average of 24,801 pesos, highlighting the economic pressures faced by residents in the region.

The Burden of Basic Needs
The report identifies food and beverages as the primary expenditure, accounting for 34.6% of total household spending. This equates to approximately 6,194 pesos per month and covers essential staples such as poultry, pork, beef, fish, dairy, cereals, fruits, vegetables, and eggs. Notably, a significant portion of this budget—18.01%—is dedicated to dining out.

Transportation is the second major drain on family resources, capturing 19.12% of total spending, or roughly 3,420 pesos monthly. Combined, food and transport account for more than 50% of current household expenditures, leaving a narrower margin for other critical priorities such as housing, healthcare, and education.

Other Spending Trends
While basic needs dominate the budget, the survey also tracked spending in other sectors:

Leisure and Culture: 9.4%
Health: 5.6%
Communications: 5.1%
The distribution of income reflects a tightening economic reality for many families, where the rising costs of daily life leave little room for discretionary spending or significant savings.
