Designed by renowned Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao and her studio, the Gran Acuario Mazatlán stands out as a striking architectural masterpiece that seamlessly merges modern design with environmental preservation. The physical structure is intentionally crafted to evoke the imagery of an ancient ruin gradually reclaimed by nature, featuring textured concrete walls wrapped in lush native plants and climbing vines that effectively blur the line between human intervention and the surrounding coastal environment. Inside, the facility offers visitors an immersive, highly educational journey through diverse terrestrial, coastal, and oceanic ecosystems, highlighting the incredible biodiversity found within the region. Among its most prominent features is the massive Great Oceanic Tank, which holds millions of liters of water and provides a sweeping, panoramic window into the vibrant marine species native to the Sea of Cortez. Beyond serving as a major regional tourism draw, the aquarium actively houses a variety of animals, including rescued wildlife, Humboldt penguins, and capybaras, distributed across thoughtfully curated habitats.
