A weekend expedition to La Malinche National Park ended in tragedy when a young female mountaineer and member of a hiking group from Orizaba, Veracruz, lost her life after suffering a severe fall in one of the most technical and rugged areas of the volcano.
The Accident: The incident occurred on the afternoon of a Sunday in August 2026 at a spot known as the “El Espinazo del Diablo” ridge (also identified as the red rocks area), a highly complex section with steep slopes located just a few meters from the summit. The victim, identified as Alma Delia Hernández García, 30 years old, slipped and suffered a hard fall from her own height, sustaining fatal injuries upon impact with the rock formations.
Rescue Operation: Following the incident, her fellow hikers immediately requested emergency assistance around 13:30 hours. An interinstitutional deployment arrived at the site, consisting of elements from the Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) of Tlaxcala, the Mountain Police, Civil Protection personnel, and vertical rescue brigades.
Confirmation and Procedures: Due to the complicated geographic conditions and high altitude, emergency crews ascended to the critical point, where they could only confirm that the hiker no longer presented vital signs. The State Attorney General’s Office (FGJE) of Tlaxcala carried out the corresponding ministerial procedures and activated high-mountain protocols for the extraction and transfer of the body to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo).
