Residents and animal protection groups in the community of La Llave, located in San Juan del Río, Querétaro, are demanding justice following the suspected mass poisoning of more than 30 dogs and cats over the past month. According to local reports, the victims included both stray animals and beloved family pets, some of which were allegedly poisoned even within private patios.
Neighbors have reported finding pieces of contaminated chicken scattered across the streets, notably around the Mina and El Paraíso neighborhoods, which they believe were used as bait. Affected animals were frequently found paralyzed before passing away. Outraged community members have since pooled together a financial reward of approximately 7,450 pesos for any information leading to the identification of the perpetrators.
In response to the alarming incident, the local Animal Care and Protection Directorate conducted inspections in the area. Authorities have urged citizens to file formal complaints and provide video or photographic evidence to escalate the case to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) for a criminal investigation. Under Querétaro state law, animal cruelty and poisoning carry severe penalties, including heavy fines and imprisonment. Meanwhile, authorities announced a free pet sterilization campaign on August 15 to support broader animal welfare in the affected community.
