MÉRIDA, Yucatán — State authorities are investigating the tragic deaths of a couple found on Tuesday afternoon inside a home in the Mercedes Barrera neighborhood of Mérida. Investigators currently suspect the case to be a femicide followed by suicide.
The bodies were discovered by relatives at a residence located on 121st Street. Distressed by the scene, the family immediately contacted emergency services. Upon arrival, first responders found the body of a 47-year-old woman lying on a bed. The body of a 51-year-old man was located in a separate room of the house.
Local security forces quickly cordoned off the area to preserve the scene. Personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) arrived shortly after to gather evidence and transport the bodies for autopsies.
According to preliminary reports, investigators recovered several handwritten notes inside the home, which are believed to have been penned by the husband. These letters have been secured as evidence.
While official causes of death have not yet been released, the FGE continues to analyze the evidence to reconstruct the events.
