A lone gunman climbed the Pyramid of the Moon at Mexico’s famed Teotihuacán archaeological site and opened fire on innocent tourists Monday, killing a Canadian woman and wounding several others before turning the gun on himself.
This latest bloodshed at one of the country’s top tourist draws exposes the ugly reality of lawlessness in Mexico, where even UNESCO-listed ruins aren’t safe from random violence.
The shooter fired from atop the massive structure in the high-traffic zone near Mexico City, striking victims from Canada, the U.S., Colombia, Brazil, and Russia. Four people were wounded by direct gunfire. Two more suffered injuries in the panicked stampede that followed. Total: one dead tourist, multiple hurt, and a chaotic scene of screams and fleeing visitors.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum offered condolences to Canada and ordered a full investigation, while authorities seized a firearm, a bladed weapon, and ammunition at the site.
