What happened at the Olmeca refinery on Thursday, April 9th, 2026?

A new fire was reported this Thursday at the Olmeca refinery, located in Dos Bocas, in the municipality of Paraíso, generating alarm among workers and nearby residents due to a large plume of smoke visible from various points within the complex.

Videos circulating on social media show fire in part of the structure, increasing concern among residents of the area.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred at the coking plant; later, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) reported that the fire took place in the coke storage facility.

This would be the third incident at the facility in less than two months. Recent events include a fire on March 17 caused by oily water in the perimeter fence, which resulted in five deaths, as well as a spill that reached the Río Seco and affected the fishing and tourism sectors.

In addition, a suspected gas leak was reported last Tuesday, although the company itself stated that it was vapors from normal operations.

The incident occurred one day after an emergency response drill was held at the complex, during which the public was asked not to panic.

The drill was scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday at site 1, sector 7, near the spherical tanks within the oil facilities, as part of the safety protocols.

According to information from the municipal Civil Protection agency, the drill simulated a leak in a storage sphere. The event was classified as a Type 2, meaning a “major internal emergency,” and therefore did not require the activation of external agencies.

Authorities stated that everything proceeded without incident and “uneventfully.”

Additional official information regarding the causes and full control of today’s fire is expected to be released in the coming hours.
