BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant is gearing up for a transformative shift as it prepares to produce electric vehicles and high-voltage batteries starting in 2027. This move aligns with BMW’s global strategy to expand its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio and underscores its commitment to sustainability and innovation.

The plant, which currently manufactures models like the BMW 3 Series, M2, and 2 Series Coupé, is set to become a key player in BMW’s NEUE KLASSE platform. This platform represents the next generation of EVs, focusing on cutting-edge technology and efficiency. To support this transition, BMW has invested significantly in the facility, which spans 80,000 square meters and employs 3,700 workers.

Sustainability is at the core of BMW’s operations in San Luis Potosí. The plant already operates with 100% photovoltaic electricity, adheres to a zero-waste-to-landfill policy, and treats all water used in production processes. These measures will be further enhanced as the plant integrates EV production.

The shift to electric vehicle manufacturing also involves the development of a robust supply chain. BMW’s network of 250 suppliers in Mexico, including 20 in Nuevo León, will play a crucial role in providing components like airbags, safety belts, and electronic modules. This collaboration highlights BMW’s recognition of Mexico’s industrial potential and talent.

By 2027, the San Luis Potosí plant will produce the Sports Activity Vehicle, a model central to BMW’s electric expansion. This initiative not only strengthens BMW’s presence in Mexico but also positions the country as a vital hub for sustainable automotive innovation. The plant’s preparations reflect BMW’s vision for a greener future and its dedication to advancing electric mobility on a global scale.
