What was supposed to be a day of relaxation and fun at the RIU Costa Mujeres hotel turned into a nightmare for guests and staff after an armed confrontation left two police officers dead, seven wounded, and three suspected criminals arrested.
On Thursday, April 3rd, the State Attorney General’s Office reported that the shooting occurred during an undercover operation against a drug gang that used the hotel as a base of operations. According to authorities, the criminals used to stay on the premises, threatening the staff and selling drugs.
The confrontation began in the pool’s bathing area when investigative police officers were attacked by two armed individuals. In the scuffle, one of the assailants was killed and the other captured. Two firearms were seized, one of them for exclusive use by the Armed Forces.

Following the initial shooting, a search operation was launched to locate the rest of the criminal group. During the chase, two police officers were killed and seven more were injured. So far, three individuals linked to the criminal gang have been arrested.
Chaos and panic gripped the hotel. Witnesses reported that the detonations caused guests to run for cover, some locking themselves in their rooms, while others tried to leave the premises.
This latest episode of violence in a tourist destination in Quintana Roo has rekindled the debate about insecurity in the region and the impact of organized crime on the hotel industry. Authorities continue their investigation to locate the other suspects and clarify the events.
