DRUG RECRUITMENT ON TIKTOK: YOUNG PEOPLE RECORD THEMSELVES ASKING TO JOIN THE CJNG

Alarming videos show young people between the ages of 17 and 30 from Hidalgo, and other Mexican states such as Jalisco, Querétaro, Puebla, Guerrero, and the State of Mexico, publicly announcing that they want to join the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) of their own free will.

They claim to be associated with the so-called “Operativo Calavera,” a group linked to the Izaguirre ranch in Teuchitlán, allegedly led by José Gregorio “N,” alias “El Lastra,” who is now in custody.

Social media, especially TikTok, has been used as a channel for criminal recruitment, offering “attractive salaries,” lodging, food, and clothing, under advertisements disguised as job offers.

Social network posts featuring Narcocorridos, symbols of the CJNG (Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion), and messages like “If you want to get ahead, the 4NG company is hiring young talent,” embed on those videos.

The National Secretary of Public Security, Omar García Harfuch, confirmed that at least 39 TikTok profiles have been detected being used to recruit hitmen, a dangerous strategy that targets vulnerable young people with false promises of a well-paid “job”

Organized crime no longer recruits solely through violence: now it also recruits people using algorithms, viral music, and videos. The questions are: Where are the digital authorities? Where are the prevention campaigns? Where are the “addressing the causes” strategies that President Claudia Sheinbaum constantly mentions?

Is TikTok becoming a gateway platform to hell?
