“Mantarray”: The First Flying Car Created by University Students in Veracruz

A group of seven students of Automotive Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronic Design from the port of Veracruz has developed the first prototype of a flying car in Mexico, inspired by drone technology.

They have named it “Mantarray,” and its design has already been tested with a person on board, according to their professor, Víctor Leyva.

The vehicle has six high-powered motors, each capable of supporting up to 60 kilos. In total, including the weight of the chassis and a passenger, the prototype has an approximate takeoff weight of 160 kilos. In tests with dead weight, it managed to hold up to 180 kilos in the air.

Now, the young people are seeking the support of the aeronautical authorities to carry out a demonstration in a public space with the appropriate safety measures.

The aim of the project, funded by the university, is to ensure that it does not remain only in the academic field, but can also have real applications, such as aerial rescue in hard-to-reach areas.
