It`s been 3 years since ‘The Guardian of the Monarch’ was assassinated

Homero Gómez González (1969 – 2020) was a Mexican environmental activist, agricultural engineer, and politician. He was the manager of El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Preserve, a component of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.

In January, three years have passed since the assassination of Homero Gómez, who was known as ‘El Guardian de la Monarca’.

Homero disappeared and the Michoacán Attorney General’s Office requested support from the population to locate him. On January 29, 2020, he was found dead in Ocampo, Michoacán.

His death, it is speculated, is related to his activism, since he served as the main defender of sanctuaries in Michoacán that year after year “embrace” the arrival of butterflies that migrate during the winter.

After his murder, the Árbol Homero anti-monument was inaugurated, which is located in the Plaza de Armas in Morelia. It is dedicated to both Homero Gómez and other environmentalists who have lost their lives while fighting for nature.
