Acid attack victim concerned about her attacker being released from prison

Maria Elena Ríos, 29, thought her career as a musician and her devotion to her sax was what led her former boyfriend and politician to hire the men who splashed acid into her face and body, disfiguring her in 2019.

Later, she learned that he simply couldn’t accept that she had broken off their relationship.

María Elena Ríos once blamed her saxophone for bringing her to the brink of death, but it has been her salvation.

Ríos thought her career as a musician and her devotion to her saxophone were what led her former boyfriend — an influential politician — to hire the men who splashed acid onto her face and body, disfiguring her.

This sick man could not simply accept the fact that Maria Elena had broken off with him.

Now, with most of the attackers in jail, Ríos says she is reconciling with her instrument, even playing it publicly.

Meanwhile, she has joined the push among activists for stronger punishment for acid attacks in Mexico.

But what is really frightening Maria Elena, is the fact that the man that ordered the attack against her, has been granted the right to purge his sentence at home, and not in state prison.

With a make-up hearing and an inexplicable agreement, my attacker has been released today” (Maria Elena wrote on her Twitter account on January 21st).

The judge of the Oaxaca Judiciary has received criticism and questioning from legislators and federal government institutions, for his decision not to order preventive detention against the alleged mastermind of the attack.

“This resolution encourages the situation of vulnerability and latent risk in which María Elena Ríos and her family find themselves, and in this sense, sends a message of impunity to the public opinion.
