The doors of Mictlán will open from October 22 to November 7, for you to explore the nine levels of the Underworld. This is the new immersive experience presented by The Experience, inspired by the “place of the dead” of the Mexica worldview.
You can discover the Underworld inside a geodesic dome that will be installed in the esplanade of the Benito Juárez mayor’s office, in Mexico City. Each level includes a visual technique so that you can vibrate in detail the path that leads you through Mictlán.
So you will have a hyper-realistic experience thanks to the video mapping effects, surround sound, robotic lights, and virtual reality viewers, elements that are combined with all the intention that you know and become sensitive to the beliefs of the pre-Hispanic era.
To begin your journey to the Underworld, you will have to start in Itzcuintlan, or better known as the “place of the dogs”, where you will be guided by a Xoloitzcuintle, to cross the Chiconahuapan -river of death-. The second level is Tepectli Monamictlan, the “place of the hills that come together”, where you will learn about its legend.
Continue through Iztepetl, just watch out for the sharp flints that the deceased go through, where the pain will have to be bearable to go to the next level: Itzehecayan, “the place of the obsidian winds”, one of the most difficult tests, but when overcoming it You will go to Paniecatacoyan, where the three-dimensional images will end up making you dizzy in this level of the Underworld.
But the road continues in Timiminaloayan, “a place where people are arrowed”, and they also throw hundreds of arrows at you that symbolize the battles lost in life. Here the augmented reality viewers will be your allies to pass this level. Continue in Teocoyohuehualoyan, where you will face Tepeyollotl, the lord of the Jaguars.
There are still two levels to overcome inside the Underworld, so the path guides you to Izmictlan Apochcalolca, where you will have to cross a river of sewage to dispose of your human remains. Finally, you arrive at Chicunamictlan, to leave the earthly sufferings with the help of Mictlantecuhtli, the lord of the Underworld.
