The Secretary of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, published on his social networks, the Mexican embassy in Iran has begun to receive the first refugee requests for citizens who wish to leave Afghanistan.

It should be noted the crisis that arises in the country, with the entry of the Taliban regime. Ebrard reported that Mexico has already begun processing the first refugee applications for Afghan citizens.

Through Twitter, Foreign Minister Ebrard pointed out that “with the active participation” of Guillermo Puente Ordorica, the Mexican ambassador to Iran, he began with the request for refuge, mainly of women and girls who wish to apply.

Differences between the concepts “asylum” and “refuge”

The fundamental difference between asylum and refuge is that the former is generally granted to an individual and the asylum status does not have to explain the reasons for offering or denying it. Instead, the refuge is humanitarian in nature and is given primarily to a group of citizens.

In the second case, the host state must justify its reasons for rejecting the refugees.
