Múgica, Michoacán — Another section of the Michoacán highway is causing motorists problems after the passing of Hurricane Enrique. On Tuesday, June 29th, the passing hurricane, which has since been downgraded into a tropical storm, left a section of highway washed out.
The large section of missing road was reported along the Siglo XXI section of highway that connects Cuatro Caminos with Las Cañas in the municipality of Múgica in the state of Michoacán.
According to preliminary reports, the collapse of the highway was the result of the intense rains with the passage of Enrique, which caused the water level to rise in the Francisco J Mújica dam. That rising water caused a softening of the earth that led to the partial collapse of the roadway.
Personnel from the National Guard and the Ministry of Communications and Transportation were working to deal with the problem, which lead to a complete closure of the road. Authorities recommend using the highway that connects Nueva Italia with the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas while repairs are made.
It is the second road collapse for the state in one month. In May, a series of roadway cracks lead to a full highway collapse in Santa Casilda with authorities referring to the 120-meter-long sinkhole as having “incalculable depth”.
