Mexico City, Mexico — The government of Mexico is getting ready to raffle items and return money it calls “stolen from the people”. The upcoming raffle will not only include a private box at Azteca Stadium valued at 20 million peso, it will also include several homes, one of which belonged to drug king El Chapo.
The raffle, which is being prepared by Devolver al Pueblo lo Robado (give back to the people what was stolen) will also include houses once owned by drug lord Joaquín Guzmán (El Chapo) and Amado Carrillo Fuentes (El Señor de los Cielos), former head of the Juarez Cartel.
The Carrillo Fuentes home has nine bedrooms, an indoor pool, hot tubs and saunas and a large party room and is located in one of the most exclusive areas of Mexico City. The house was auctioned in 2020 for 49.7 million peso (about two million euros), but the purchase did not materialize, so it has been added to the raffle.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced Thursday that money collected from the September 15 and 16 auctions will go to buy vaccines, finance scholarships and cover wellness programs.
“All of this is going to be handed over to the people. It is going to be raffled so that this income will help in the purchase of vaccines, medicines, scholarships, for the people, give back to the people what was stolen, everything we can recover ( …). The raffle helps to strengthen finances, to have the budget and to support wellness programs,” he added.
El Chapo’s house will also be auctioned. It is valued at 3.83 million peso and is located on Emiliano García Street in Culiacán, in Sinaloa. The home is part of Guzmán’s legend where he lived, avoiding arrest using a secret underground tunnel.
The upcoming raffle includes 22 items with an estimated total value of 250 million peso.
