The recognition of Zacatecas as ‘American Capital of Culture 2021’ has caused the state to stand out as a place that protects a historic-artistic legacy among its streets and monuments.
But most of all, Zacatecas demonstrates its cultural wealth through its museums that house a wide cultural proposal. In this way, a long-term dialogue between visitors and society as a whole is strengthened, as they witness the work that great masters of Mexican and international art have left for posterity.
Here we present a selection of the most important museums in Zacatecas.
Museo Pedro Coronel
An imposing building built in the seventeenth century – which used to be a Jesuit school, a neighborhood and even a prison – and today, its corridors and rooms boast a vast collection of international art composed of works by prominent painters such as Dalí. , Miró, Kandinsky, Goya and Picasso, among other masters of contemporary art.
Museo Manuel Felguérez
Zacatecas houses the only Museum of Abstract Art in Latin America. The Old Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, built in the 19th century, has among its heritage a collection of artists ranging from the generation of the rupture (1950s of the 20th century) to the present day. The Murals of Osaka are one of its main attractions due to its monumentality and thematic greatness.
Museo Rafael Coronel
The famous Mexican artist and painter has his own museum in the state of Zacatecas. There, a majestic enclosure – built during the 16th century, known as the Ex-Convent of San Francisco – shelters within its walls an impressive collection of 10,000 masks. These bring visitors closer to Mexican folk art; as with the Mesoamerican heritage, through a collection of vessels.
Museo Zacatecano
The center of the state capital is the meeting point to discover an emblematic building that at the time functioned as the Casa de Moneda de Zacatecas. But inside, the remnants of Huichol art surprise the visitor, through an important collection of objects from this millenary culture.
These four museums make up part of the captivating cultural offer that Zacatecas offers.
