The natural and cultural beauty of the municipality of Tenosique has made this town one of the most appreciated treasures of the Tabasco state and each time a bigger number of visitors come to Tenosique de Pino Suarez to explore the different attractions this town can offer.
The word Tenosique comes from the Mayan word ta-na-tsiic which can be translated as “house of the weaver”. However, some other sources state that the word comes from the Nahuatl expression, tsuani tecpan, which means more or less the same.
The Usumacinta and San Pedro Martir rivers have a fundamental role in the territory since these two rivers constitute a major tourist attraction to both locals and visitors.
This way, the Ecological Reserve Usumacinta Canyon is one of the best preserved secrets of Tenosique. Come here to enjoy nature and different outdoor activities and adventure sports.
It is estimated that the Maya inhabited this region 3 thousand years ago and that they left numerous constructions that have become nowadays important Archaeological Zones like Pomoná, Panhalé and San Claudio which are the most studied and explored at the moment. On the other hand, there are other important areas that have not been explored just yet such as Chiniquijá.
The Maya heritage is not limited, however, to archeological vestiges: Maya heritage is still very much alive in Tenosique.
One of the expressions at Tenosique that calls attention internationally is the Carnaval, considered the weirdest carnival in the world, this, for its Mayan roots. In this carnival that takes place from February to March, you can enjoy the traditional dance of del Pochó, where you can see different traditional characters such as pochoveras, cojóes, tigers or balandes.
