Cancun, Q.R. — A second combi driver has been stopped on Cancun city streets after authorities found him providing the public service without a face mask. The driver, who was stopped in Region 91, was eventually arrested.

According to a statement from the Municipal Secretariat of Public Safety, when agents asked the driver to put on a mask, he became aggressive and refused to comply, for which he was arrested. He is the second public city transport driver to be arrested for failing to comply with the state’s mandatory preventative health measures

Forty-eight hours after specialized Covid police hit Cancun streets, one public combi driver is arrested for overcrowding. He is the first public transport driver in the city to be arrested for failing to abide by the state’s mandatory health protocols.

The arrest took place in the southern portion of the city Wednesday when police stopped the unit for inspection. Inside were 16 passengers. The Route 6 TTE driver was taken into custody for allowing overcrowding of his unit.

According to the agency, the driver, R.M.C., had to return the cost of the ticket to users before being detained and sent to the Municipal Retention Center.

In the same filter, two other public unit drivers were fined by the Mobility Institute of the State of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) for not complying with regulations. The inspections are being carried out in a joint operation by the specialized Policía de Reacción Covid-19 and inspectors from the state’s Mobility Institute.

Cancun implemented a newly formed and specially trained Covid police force to monitor city streets as contagion figures continued to increase and residents failed to abide by health protocols.
