With insufficient infrastructure and educational offerings at the higher level, the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz will have to face the challenge of the Interoceanic corridor on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of the main development projects of the current administration.
With an average coverage rate well below 41.6 percent at the national level, both entities must urgently not only substantially expand their educational infrastructure at the higher level, but also review the relevance of their teaching offer and combine it with the needs of the economic sectors that will prevail in the region, was said at the forum “The challenge of the Interoceanic corridor as a pillar of the Fourth Transformation.”
José Aguirre Vázquez, General Director of Planning and Development of Anuies, expressed his desire that this project generate the conditions for integral, socioeconomic development, where higher education participates in an important way. The challenge is enormous, since the current conditions of the infrastructure and educational offer of both entities are insufficient, he said.
He cited that in 2000, Oaxaca was five points below the national average for higher education coverage, but in 2019 this difference widened to 18 points. Veracruz went from 13 to 5 points below the average, with a current coverage of 34.9, less serious, but below what the country and the region need.
The director of the Anuies recognized that these entities have advanced, since there are a large number of educational institutions and more than 50 thousand students in this region alone, with around 490 educational programs in 19 of the 79 municipalities that comprise it. but it does not keep pace with the rest of the country.
