The National Football League (NFL) announced that this year’s season will not host games outside of the United States, leaving Mexico and the United Kingdom off the calendar traditionally held each season.

This time, the decision obeys the security protocol to guarantee the well-being of players, workers, and fans, in the face of the COVID-19 outbreak that has impacted the holding of massive events around the world.

Unlike other sporting events, the NFL remains hopeful of its regular season, perhaps with some adjustments to the start and end, however, it does not guarantee that there will be an audience in the stadiums, and it definitely ruled out leaving the American Union.

After consulting with medical authorities, national and local governments, the NFL Players Association, and international partners, this decision was made, said Roger Goodell, NFL commissioner.

The league’s executive vice president of Strategy and Growth noted, “After considerable analysis, we believe that the decision to play all of our games in the country this season is the right one for our players, our clubs, and all of our fans in the United States. , Mexico and the United Kingdom ”.

The executive added, “We greatly appreciate the support of our government and statistical partners in Mexico and the UK, who agree with this decision, and look forward to returning for the games in both countries in the 2021 season.”

Through the efforts of the defunct Mexico Tourism Promotion Council (CPTM), the NFL agreed to hold a regular-season game in our country every year, starting in 2016, at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

In 2018 it was canceled by the NFL, just a few weeks before it took place, on the grounds that the court was not in optimal condition, and the problem was blamed on a concert held at the stadium.

For 2019, the NFL resumed its games, after the negotiations made by the Tourism Secretary (Sectur) of Miguel Torruco supported by the private initiative, to bring top-level events in Mexico, without contribution from the public treasury.

The visit of the NFL in Mexico generates an economic spill close to one billion pesos, according to the latest official records.
