A YouTuber has sparked a significant controversy after offering a 40,000-peso bounty for anyone who attacks the Bishop of Aguascalientes, Juan Espinoza. The threat follows a recent public criticism by the Bishop directed at the current Mexican government.
The YouTuber, identified as a supporter of the Morena party, took to social media to issue the threat after Bishop Espinoza delivered a homily in which he challenged the government’s rhetoric on freedom and national sovereignty. During his sermon, the Bishop argued that while the administration speaks of plurality, it simultaneously threatens those who think differently and undermines the nation by “handing the country over to criminals.”
In response to the online threat, the Mexican Episcopal Conference issued a formal condemnation. Monseñor Ramón Castro Castro, president of the conference, defended the right of religious leaders to speak out, stating that some attempt to silence bishops by claiming they are “getting into politics,” but they cannot be restricted to only speaking within the confines of the church.
The Frente Nacional por la Familia in Aguascalientes also rallied in defense of the Bishop. Its president, Jaime Castro, dismissed the YouTuber’s threat as a fallacy, stating that the Bishop has the full support of the Church, society, and the people of Mexico for “telling the truth.”
Despite the backlash, the YouTuber, José Lápiz, doubled down on his statements, claiming his words were figurative and sarcastic. However, he maintained his stance by reiterating his intent to continue offering the “bounty.” Lápiz also directed offensive remarks toward other political figures, using derogatory language to refer to a female politician, whom he labeled a “whore.”
Legal and security concerns are now being addressed. Representatives of the Frente Nacional por la Familia stated that they are currently evaluating the credibility and scope of the threat to determine if a formal legal complaint will be filed to create a criminal record for the individual. Additionally, state deputies have called on the local government to provide official security for the Bishop, citing the “imminent” nature of the threat.
The Bishop’s office has remained silent regarding the incident.
