Tropical Storm Vance Triggers Flash Floods in Los Cabos, Sweeping Vehicles into the Sea

- November 3, 2026

LOS CABOS, Mexico – Heavy rains fueled by Tropical Storm Vance triggered flash floods in the Los Cabos region of Baja California Sur, sending several vehicles into the ocean and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents.

Authorities in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo reported that overflowing creeks swept cars and a passenger van into the sea. Social media footage captured the rapid rise of the Lagunitas creek, which carried vehicles toward the shoreline of Costa Azul Beach, where they were subsequently battered by waves.

Emergency services responded to the crisis with 60 personnel, including ambulances and specialized rescue units. Reports from Civil Protection and Firefighters confirmed 12 rescues throughout the region, including a 13-year-old child swept away by a current and a man nearly pulled into the water at the Marina. While significant property damage was reported, authorities confirmed there were no fatalities.

The flooding also struck public infrastructure. The IMSS Family Medicine Unit No. 6 in central San José del Cabo was inundated, leading to a precautionary evacuation of 350 people.

In response to the dangerous conditions, officials issued “black flags” at 31 beaches, prohibiting residents and tourists from entering the water. Public transportation in San José del Cabo was temporarily suspended due to road conditions, while service in Cabo San Lucas remains operational but subject to delays. Federal transit on the Transpeninsular Highway has been restored.

Municipal crews are currently working to clear debris and rehabilitate key roads in several neighborhoods. Civil Protection has urged the public to avoid crossing flooded streets or creeks, warning that water levels can rise rapidly even after rainfall appears to subside.
