Tren Maya Enhances Yucatán Mobility with New Strategic Links in Cancún, Mérida, and Playa del Carmen

- October 10, 2026

The Tren Maya railway system has officially expanded its network with the launch of four new connection routes, designed to bridge the gap between railway stations and key urban, commercial, and tourist hubs across the Yucatán Peninsula.

The new links, which became operational on August 15, 2026, were detailed by Manuel Jaime Ramírez Camacho, head of the Tren Maya project, during a morning press conference on October 8. The expansion aims to enhance passenger mobility by providing direct access to high-traffic destinations that were previously outside the primary rail network.

Expanded Connectivity for Key Destinations

The four new routes focus on seamless transitions in the region’s most prominent tourist and commercial centers:

  • Cancún International Airport: A dedicated link connecting the Tren Maya station directly to the airport terminal to facilitate easier travel for international and domestic flyers.
  • Playa Las Américas (Cancún): A new connection between the railway station and this major urban and commercial landmark in the city.
  • Playa del Carmen Downtown and Tourist Zone: A shuttle service connecting the railway station to the heart of Playa del Carmen’s commercial and beach activities.
  • Mérida Teya to Plaza Grande: A route establishing a direct connection between the Mérida Teya station and the historic city center of Mérida.

By integrating these “last-mile” connections, the Tren Maya is evolving into a multimodal transport system, allowing travelers to move more fluidly between the train, local transit, and their final destinations.

Growing Service Portfolio in 2026

These new routes are part of a broader strategy to diversify and upgrade the passenger experience throughout 2026. The expansion follows the successful launch of the “Tren Restaurante” (Dining Train) on September 13, which offers breakfast and lunch services, along with specialized menus on Sundays.

The continuous addition of these services—ranging from increased geographical reach to improved on-board amenities—underscores the project’s goal of establishing a comprehensive transportation infrastructure for the Yucatán Peninsula’s growing tourism industry.
