Sumo Wrestling Returns to Mexico After 45-Year Hiatus with “SUMO CDMX 2026”

- October 28, 2026

MEXICO CITY – Sumo wrestling is set to make a historic return to Mexico as “SUMO CDMX 2026” prepares to take place on Saturday, November 14, at the Arena CDMX. The event marks the first time the Japanese martial art will be showcased in the country in 45 years.

Organized by Never Say Never (NSN), the exhibition will feature 16 professional Japanese ex-wrestlers competing in a tournament of 27 matches to crown a champion. The event aims to balance high-level competition with an educational approach, introducing the audience to the traditional rituals and rigorous preparation inherent in the sport.

Tournament Structure and Key Participants

During a formal presentation held on October 22 at the Asociación México Japonesa, the competition was divided into four distinct groups. The group leaders were announced as follows:

  • Group A: Akiseyama
  • Group B: Hidenoumi
  • Group C: Daishōhō
  • Group D: Kyokushūhō

The remaining twelve participants were distributed through a random draw to finalize the November matchups. The presentation also featured Akiseyama Mitsuhiko and Tenkaihō Takayuki, who traveled from Japan to perform training movements and explain the technical nuances of the discipline.

Cultural Traditions and Rituals

A core component of SUMO CDMX 2026 is the preservation of cultural heritage. Spectators will be able to witness traditional elements of the sport, including the ceremonial use of salt and shiko—a rhythmic leg-lifting exercise performed by the wrestlers. The organizers stated that the proposal seeks to immerse the Mexican public in the values of respect, discipline, and preparation that define Japanese tradition.
